The follies of excessively verbal orientation

On AAR, Ellen Ratner tells Thom Hartmann that she can’t get over McCain’s ‘That one!’ Thom Hartmann says, uncomfortably, that he wants to be charitable and think that McCain meant that senator. Ratner scolds him, ‘Oh, Tom!’ Hartmann tries another verbal formulation, So do you think he meant ‘that’ black man? Ratner doesn’t answer. Hartmann keeps fishing: Do you think he meant this? Do you think he meant that? Do you think he meant this other thing?

(BTW, if you had to give a ‘feeling’-less verbal formulation, presumably McCain (would have) ‘meant’ ‘that presidential candidate before you’. Noting this only emphasizes how detached from human experience Hartmann’s verbal orientation was.)
