Apollo 4 on column of fire

On "winning" the war and our national alcoholism

Some comments I posted on Kevin Drum's weblog:
Kevin [Drum] says:

In other words, they don't have a clue how to win this war. John Kerry needs to convince the country that he does.

I'm afraid this is bass ackwards. What we need is not a way to win this war; rather, we need a way to lose it. That's what we needed in Vietnam, and it is what we need now in Iraq. John Kerry, however, cannot present the facts in this fashion; I wouldn't, even though it's my opinion.

I doubt it is John Kerry's opinion, and so the pain will continue. Nevertheless we need John Kerry. It's better to suffer from a mild national neurosis of military machoism, than to suffer from the severe and untreated alcoholism of our current leader, and our nationwide enabling of it. (We all need to join Al-Anon.)
