This reminds me of a TV talk show some years ago where a consultant of
some kind figured out that having the wife go to work as well as the
husband was actually costing the family more money than it made. This
was not an unusual case, I am sure. People don’t take into account the
expenses.

Another thing is that gasoline should cost a lot more than it does in
the US. Maybe one day we will quit subsidizing that problem, but the
fix could come as a shock to many people.
