Digby’s collapse-inducing optimism surprises me

Digby despairs:

I'm not saying the Democrats can't win. It shouldn't even be a question with bush at 25% and the wrong track number at 81. But I assumed after all we know about how the Republicans operate, they'd pull out all the stops to take McCain down hard, taking nothing for granted. It looks as though I'm wrong about that --- at best they are dithering --- and it has me really, really worried for the first time.

I have to admit, it surprises me that Digby thought angels of Democratic soft funding would come together magically just because ‘they had to’, or that her anxiety level about the election was as low as it seems to have been. Hopefully her panicky reaction will settle towards a very steady moderate anxiety, which is what I try to maintain; and hopefully she will realize that people can’t make things happen by declaring those happenings ‘necessary’; it doesn’t work for Bush and it won’t work for Digby or George Soros, either.

Learning and practice, learning and practice. Everything humans do takes learning and practice.

Cross-eyed due to GRUB

Regarding my userpic here, this stock photo supposedly was an impromptu shot at this young bride’s wedding, just after the ceremony but before the partying. An expression of how she was feeling. However, this is just Day One. Then come Days Two, Three, ... , One Thousand Two Hundred Fifty-seven, ... :)

Well, I just crossed my own eyes because I let Gentoo upgrade GRUB, the bootloader, to the latest testing version, on Kristy’s computer. Booting to XP was fine, but the damn thing handed the Linux kernel a corrupted command line. So I started a download of the latest Gentoo Live DVD beta for x86 Linux, to use to re-install GRUB, but then I figured out a way in the broken GRUB to get the kernel a usable command line, and thus started up Gentoo with no problem. Then I re-installed the previous GRUB version, and I removed GRUB from the list of things for Gentoo to upgrade (which is how I kept things for a long time, until a few months ago).

Fortunately the last step eliminates Days Two, Three, and so on for at least a while. :)

Nonsense about Randi Rhodes being suspended

Jeff Farias is cooperating with his callers in positing and expressing nonsense about Randi Rhodes being suspended for calling Hillary Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro ‘fucking whores’ during a stand-up act arranged by an Air America affiliate. There is the usual non sequitur about the First Amendment (which Farias seems too ignorant to counter), and there is the suggestion that this was outside of Randi’s work, even though it was an AAR affiliate that was operating the event, so that effectively Randi was representing AAR in that affiliate’s market (San Francisco, I believe). And Farias said something about Randi being ‘squeezed out of her job’; er, Jeff, she was suspended, not fired.

I personally believe that an appropriate way to handle this is for Randi to stay off of the topic of the Clinton campaign, because she is on record, now, referring to Clinton and Ferraro in the terms of a personal gripe. Even I don’t do that, despite having a personal gripe against them. :) Whether a suspension is appropriate, I don’t know, but I do not oppose the suspension and don’t criticize it.

Thankfully Malloy is on vacation since Friday and so doesn’t have the opportunity to compound his, I think, unjustified anger, which ate up most of his Thursday program.

Sam Seder seems to be the main sub for Randi, so from my point of view the suspension has led to a temporary but vast improvement in programming. :) Sam thinks Randi went too far but shouldn’t be suspended, because she was not on-air, but I don’t get the impression he feels that way strongly. But Sam is way smarter than Malloy and way, way smarter than Farias. :)
