Biden was necessary

Barack Obama had no other option than Joe Biden. I wouldn’t say it that way before, because Obama may have chosen someone different, because I don’t have every fact that Obama does and Obama perhaps doesn’t have all the resources I do. I suspect, however, that Obama’s reasoning was similar to mine: he had to find an intellectual ‘equal’ who was male, white, well known and popular, clean and articulate, eager to give his opinion, a bit too fond of war but not too much too fond, and who had many years of Washington experience—as many as possible without being older than the hills.

You would have difficulty dreaming up a better match than Joe Biden. I couldn’t think of anyone else.

I have to say, I would have picked Joe Biden, and figured that, hey, the VP doesn’t set the policy—I do—so maybe it’s actually a good thing to have somebody who isn’t quite who I would want to set policy, especially someone who might not hesitate to tell me what he would do if he were me.
