Apollo 4 on column of fire

A sign of the times?

See the photo at

It sort of reminds you of all the machine gun and hand grenade wielding leftist protestors at all the events on President Bush’s son’s bamboozlepalooza Social-Security-destruction tour. It’s important, after all, to fight for the freedom to reenact James Caan’s role in ‘A Bridge Too Far’. (Nothing persuades a doctor to do one’s will like threatening his or her life.)

What Howard Dean predicts on healthcare

Here is Howard Dean’s prognosis (just heard by me).

1. Obama hedges on the public option, encouraging the Senate to pass a bill without a public option. This requires 60 votes.

2. The House bill will have a public option, which will be retained after reconciliation. The reconciled bill requires only 51 votes in the Senate and will pass.

Dean reiterated that the Blue Dogs, in his opinion, have helped greatly in improving the House bill’s small-business-related provisions.

I must say ...

... that Victoria Jones is my least favorite Talk Radio News personality. She doesn’t seem to understand how politics works (even as well as I do as a dabbling amateur who only got interested in 2000), and sounds like Jimmy Carter’s malaise speech. Mostly it’s the latter that bothers me; I do not like it when news reporters are susceptible to propaganda-caused disillusionment. I do not like it at all. Probably FDR wouldn’t have liked it, either. :)

Jon Elliot just talked to Jones, and now sounds depressed rather than angry, which is how he started. We need the latter. I wish he’d talked to Bob Ney instead. (Yes, that Bob Ney.)

New fontconfig patch

I’ve updated my patch for fontconfig so that it works with fontconfig-2.7.1:

This patch turns off recognition of Preferred Family and Style, changes precedences, and maybe does a few more things that I don’t remember. This is to work around bugs in GIMP and maybe still in Inkscape and other programs. These programs otherwise are totally broken if you, for instance, collect such fonts as Adobe Opticals.

I’m not making any bug reports, because I’m too used to getting the runaround on font-related issues.

(There may be side effects on other programs, due to the precendence changes.)
