I broke my effing scanner
I think I broke it by plugging in the Firewire backwards. The jack was effing sprung. But I can’t get the thing recognized either Firewire or USB now.
It’s an old scanner that I got used, an Epson Perfection 2450. I just ordered its effing successor, the V500, for which I’ll need to use an outside-the-SANE-project driver, because it’s got a different protocol. I notice the driver version that is in Gentoo portage is a bit dated, but maybe it works fine and maybe I can use the newer version that I already downloaded from the Avasys site.
I should be able to get up to 6400-dpi scans with the new one, except that’s a whole effing lot of data. Maybe with different settings in GIMP (in particular, fewer undoes) it would be practical, though painful.
I ordered fast shipping even though I could get Super-Saver; it’s got to do with my OCD. I fret painfully.
I hope this effing works, particularly on my effing amd64 chip. (I notice some of the third-party software requires a 32-bit CPU.)
It’s conceivable I busted the Firewire port on the motherboard, but I suspect not. Won’t need it for the new scanner, anyway.
