Is it funny that NASA plans to replace the space shuttle with a
reusable Apollo capsule?

Of course we’ve seen that the space shuttle is a difficult object to
protect during re-entry, and that’s starting from a dead halt in low
earth orbit, not jetting homewards from the moon.
The goals of the space shuttle project were too science-fictiony.
We were going to fly space shuttles as if they were 747s and it
would be really cheap because of the volume. In a sense we got ahead of
ourselves, trying to leap up the learning curve.
