The Hindenburg disaster

Thanks to PBS, someone tell mister_kat that his and my theory of the Hindenburg fire is close to the truth: it looks as if the landing ropes were part of the cause of the fire. Apparently (a) the skin was doped with a material similar to the Space Shuttle’s solid propellant, and (b) it was not properly attached to the frame electrically. What was supposed to happen is the ropes would drain off the airship’s electric charge, but parts of the skin stayed charged, and mister_kat can figure out the rest. :)

Oh, yeah, I almost forgot to mention. Many, many, many years ago mister_kat and I watched film of the disaster and decided, based on the sequence of events, that likely the ropes were involved in some electrical event that ignited the fire.
