I spent that evening of 9/11/1991 in Troy, New York, at the house of a friend who would share the driving. On the 12th we made it to Elkhart, Indiana, before quitting for the evening. On the 13th at around 3 o’clock CDT, I think it was, or maybe 2 o’clock because we were keeping our watches set to Eastern Time, we arrived in Arden Hills, Minnesota.
When we took the Ryder van to its drop-off the odometer read precisely the number of miles I was allowed to avoid extra charges. Usually people don’t reach that number, but it was the very indirect route via the New York Thruway that did it.
