What Bush said

I’m a little surprised that more people haven’t noticed that what Bush said today is that the NIE findings demonstrate that Iran is successfully hiding a nuclear weapons program. They seem to think he was saying something incoherent, but he wasn’t: it was coherent dishonesty.

(In actual life, what happened is that Iran had some activities they were hiding, but got caught by the IAEA, which has extremely sensitive instruments that found traces of some substances up in the rafters somewhere in one place. So Iran confessed and opened up. Of course having a civilian nuclear program is a boost to any future efforts at making nuclear weapons, but international treaties are completely clear that Iran has the right to develop nuclear power plants—which they really could use, ironically, because they can’t pump all that oil they have quickly enough to keep up with domestic demands.

A state that habitually does not honor its treaties cannot be trusted on anything, and that is the kind of state Bush has pushed us towards being.
