Obama’s rhetoric

AAR just played some of Obama’s victory speech. David Bender says he gets goosepimples. Mark Green says Obama is eloquent. To me it sounded like ‘We must move forward, not backward! upward, not forward! and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom!’ Admittedly, I don’t really expect better than that from an Iowa caucus victory speech, and the occasion doesn’t demand more than that.

Of course, that sort of twirling-towards-freedom speech is exactly what inspires a lot of people. That’s why the line was so funny: the Simpsons was poking fun at people who speechify like Obama was doing, and even more so at the people who are inspired by it.

It is one of the few actual goals in my life to do what I can to prevent people from being inspired by that kind of speech—including myself.
