Python tells me that lists and associative arrays are ‘unhashable types’!!!

Somebody explain that to me. Here, by the way, is some Icon code using hashes of associative arrays:

link ximage
procedure main()
a := table()
b := table()
a[b] := "Hello!"
write(ximage(a))
end

And here is the output:

T1 := table(&null)
T1[{T2 := table(&null)
T2}] := "Hello!"

Why can’t Python do that, just do it????
