Mission to Mars

This issue of the Spectrum about a mission to Mars irritates me awfully. People eager to go to Mars really seem to have the attitude that we’ve screwed up Earth, and so should move a few tens of millions of miles down the road so we can screw up Mars. It’s Plan B.

Since the late 1970s I have been gravitating towards the side that values unmanned scientific probes over what passes for a manned space program, and this Spectrum just gave me a helpful push. I have no objection to manned space research as such – I love the idea that people have walked on the moon, it still amazes me – but it should be done by adults for decent reasons that are lacking, and not simply so Trekkies and L5ers can have whole new planets onto which to dump their motor oil and take a crap.
