Baucus et al. were trying to set up a secret bill markup group of some kind, and Harry Reid stopped them. All we need of them is that they work in the open and not filibuster the final bill, but filibustering your own party is not something done lightly (unless you are Joe Lieberman, who seems not to understand the meaning of ‘serious’, but he won’t do it anymore).
As I said, the Republicans are irrelevant, plus no one in MIami voted for Kent Conrad
